Jack Kerouac's ex-girlfriend, the author Joyce Johnson, tells PEOPLE that the intense public reaction to Kerouac's 1957 novel 'On the Road' made him feel he "was under a tremendous attack all the time" and ultimately led to an increase in his drinking. The celebrated author died in 1969 at age 49.
